Mentoring men is an amazing journey. It’s hard – actually very hard – it requires an anointing of 2 Corinthians, chapter 3, and most importantly the Holy Spirit ever-present in real time.
At the beginning of the year, the Holy Spirit placed on our hearts to host a men’s event to declare an end to divorce in the church. Looking at the statistics which indicate that divorce in the church runs at the same level as divorce in the world, you’d have to be pretty certain to make that declaration.
The event was structured with worship, followed by a message from Pastor Mark Lyndon-Jones, Director of Elim MPower, entitled: ‘No More Stinking Thinking’. Saying it was powerful is an understatement. Mark tackled the taboo subject of our thoughts – the way a man thinks, so he is (Proverbs 23:7).
Following that powerful message there were three breakout sessions: ‘Kingdom Citizenship Success’ led by Pastor Eric Asare of End Times Ministries; ‘The Heart’ led by Christian Men’s Network UK Director Felix Ajayi and ‘Conflict Resolution’ led by myself, Roy McEwen, Christian Business Coach and 2=1 Marriage Ministry.
Testimonies f lowed all afternoon, and have continued since the event. One brother, estranged from his Christian wife, received revelation from the Holy Spirit about his own ‘stinking thinking’. He repented and within days received a call to come visit the children.
Another brother, who came with a heavy heart, contemplating divorce, made the declaration and attended the Conflict Resolution session. Divorce is now off the table for him, and the Holy Spirit has given him renewed perspective for his marriage.
This event was not an end, but the beginning of a movement. Online monthly mentoring events are in progress. The first mentoring session in April dealt with money, and challenged men to look at the role money plays in their lives and how to include the Holy Spirit in all their financial decisions. May’s topic was mental wellbeing, encouraging men to capture every thought and subject each one to Christ.
It is easy to become caught up in our own thoughts, but the Word tells us in Psalm 1:1-3: “Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers, but whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and who meditates on his law, day and night.”
Other topics covered include fatherlessness, a very relevant topic for this time. In 2022, of all single parent families in the UK, 84 per cent were single mother homes and 16 per cent single father homes. This equates to over 2.5 million homes where fatherlessness is prevalent. The problem is real. The heartbreaking part of this story is that there are 2.5 million men, many of whom are suffering and apart from their children, representing much brokenness. We feel your pain and intercede for all families.
