The world is crying out for authentic masculinity

To be men in today’s society requires strength tempered with humility, argues Mark Lyndon-Jones

In a world that often confuses strength with aggression and success with selfish ambition, the call to authentic manhood stands out as a beacon of light in the darkness.

Colossians 3:17 boldly declares, “Whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.” This verse encapsulates the essence of true masculinity – a life lived in service to others, rooted in gratitude and honouring the name of Christ in all things.

For men seeking to embody authentic masculinity, Colossians 3:17 serves as a powerful guidepost.

It challenges us to align every aspect of our lives – our words, actions and attitudes – with the character of Christ. In a culture that often glorifies self-centred pursuits and personal gain, this biblical mandate calls us to a higher standard – one that prioritises humility, integrity and selfless love.

As men navigating the complexities of modern life, we are bombarded with messages that seek to define masculinity in narrow and often toxic terms. However, Colossians 3:17 reminds us that true strength lies not in dominance or control, but in surrendering our will to God’s and living out his purposes with courage and conviction. Living out Colossians 3:17 requires a radical shift in mindset – a willingness to let go of our own agendas and ambitions and submit them to the lordship of Christ.

It challenges us to re-evaluate our priorities, motivations and goals in light of God’s Kingdom values.

Whether we are fathers striving to lead our families with wisdom and grace, professionals seeking to excel in our careers with integrity and diligence, or friends endeavouring to support one another with compassion and loyalty, Colossians 3:17 beckons us to do all things for the glory of God. In a world hungry for authentic examples of masculinity, men who embrace the principles of Colossians 3:17 stand out as beacons of hope and inspiration. Living lives marked by gratitude, service and devotion to Christ, we have the opportunity to redefine what it means to be a man in today’s society – one characterised by strength tempered with humility, success grounded in selflessness, and leadership guided by compassion.

In this season of consecration may we rise to the challenge set forth in Colossians 3:17 – to live lives that honour God in all we do, embodying the true essence of authentic masculinity for a world in desperate need of genuine role models.
