School that brings transformation in Manila celebrates 10th anniversary
City Gates Academy, a school set up in the Phillipines to provide free education to the poorest children celebrated it's 10th anniversary in September.
Established as the result of a mission trip in 2003 led by Elim Pastor Stephen Derbyshire from City Gates Church, Ilford, City Gates Academy is a fun, bright, energetic infant and nursery school providing free education to the poorest children living on the outskirts of Manila.
Moved by their experience, the team felt the call to do something to alleviate the plight of the poor children in the Philippines.
In partnership with Pastor Glenn Isaguirre, preparations began and building started in 2005. Thanks to the vision, dedication and sacrifices of Pastor Glenn Isaguirre and Pastor Stephen Derbyshire the school has now been in operation for 10 years.
City Gates Academy believes in education, that it is the only way to alleviate poverty, in providing a better future to the poorest of the poor. Additionally we believe in providing not just education but giving dignity and respect to children and parents in our school.
In exchange for their free education, parents surrender 12 hours of work per month. This provides them with pride and dignity as human beings, as well as an opportunity to wean them from a dole-out mentality with a sense of community.
