Families in Exeter engage in creative mission using Lego

Each year, a staggering 36 billion of the world-famous LEGO bricks are produced and enjoyed by people all over the world.

In early October 2024, some of these made their way to Exeter for a special and innovative creative mission event aimed at attracting families and children from across the city.

For the first time, in a unique expression of church activity, Rediscover Church, which had recently moved into The Former Range store at Exeter Quay with over 1,200 seats, hosted the event to inspire budding builders with creativity and imagination.

The event, called ‘Lego Bible Builders,’ took place on 5 October and invited kids and their parents to team up to create LEGO masterpieces inspired by stories in the Bible, from boats and water scenes, inspired by Jesus in the boat with His disciples, to giant animals from the story of Noah and the Ark, as well as picnic food made out of Lego, inspired by the miracle of the loaves and fishes.

The church organised thousands of bricks to be at this special event, which proved to be very popular, following the recent success of the Channel 4 TV show ‘Lego Masters,’ which brought teams together to create LEGO creations in a battle for a prize.

The church hoped that the enduring success of the LEGO brick would provide a fun and unique experience for families. Children built creations of all shapes and sizes while enjoying the spacious new church building, which the congregation had moved into in April.

Jason Ham, the church’s Kids Ministry Coordinator, said: “LEGO is a firm favourite in any toy box. We love families and know that children have the most amazing imaginations. So, we thought, why not bring these two things together for this creative event which saw families come and build incredible LEGO creations inspired by Bible stories, all while having lots of fun. Our family events are always very popular throughout the year, and with the ever-continuing success of the LEGO brick, we knew this one would be too!”

The church has more family mission events coming up, including a Light Party at the end of October, and it’s hoped the families who attended the Lego event would come to that too, with a clear presentation of the Gospel being made and a warm invite being given to their Sunday Services, which on a typical Sunday attracts 70 kids along to its weekly programme.

In the past, the church families team have also organised, Easter Trails, interactive nativity experiences, drama productions, and more, with many hundreds of kids and families taking part, which have proved really fruitful and successful in building great relationships with families across the area, many of which are not engaged with regular church activity.
