Dr Derek Talbot celebrates PhD

On 4 March 2015, Regents Theological College celebrated with postgraduate student Dr Derek Talbot who has recently gained his PhD, validated by the University of Wales, Bangor.

His 100,000 word dissertation entitles "The Place of Scripture in the Presidency and Speeches of Abraham Lincoln", suggested that Lincoln's use of the Bible was not merely a by product of his cultural environment but sprung from his own Christian faith.

His paper also demonstrated how Lincoln used Biblical texts to support his rhetorical arguments in key speeches at critically decisive junctures during the American civil war.

During a research trip to the USA, Dr Talbot even discovered a key and an unknown source on Lincoln written by his closest confidante and locked away in a library archive since 1938!

That just goes to show that once you begin theological research, you never know what you might discover...
