Power of being unplugged!
There are enormous benefits in ‘unplugging’ for a day, argues MPower Director Mark Lyndon-Jones
The first day of March marks not only St David’s Day in Wales but also a recently inaugurated ‘Global Unplugging Day’! This is aimed at helping people take a 24-hour respite from technology, to inspire us to have a healthier life/ tech balance by taking an hour, or even a full day, away from technology! Can you imagine that?
In today’s fast-paced and tech-driven world, it can be challenging to find moments of solace and tranquillity. However, deliberately ‘unplugging’ from technology for a time can offer numerous benefits that rejuvenate our minds, bodies, and overall well-being.
Mental clarity and improved focus
Unplugging allows us to reclaim our attention and regain mental clarity. By stepping away from screens and notifications, we give ourselves the space to focus on the present moment.
Enhanced social connections
While technology has connected us in unprecedented ways, it can also inadvertently distance us from genuine human interactions. By unplugging, we create opportunities to foster authentic connections encouraging us to be fully present with others.
Improved well-being
Constant exposure to technology can lead to increased stress levels and an overload of information. Unplugging provides respite from this digital bombardment, offering a chance to relax and recharge.
Increased creativity and inspiration
By taking a break from the digital world, we open ourselves up to new sources of inspiration and allow our own creative energies to flourish – try taking a walk through the forest or a short break from the pressures of being constantly plugged in.
As I write this, I am planning one of my timely retreats to unplug – why not do the same and feel the benefits of the profound promise of rest for weary souls that Christ still offers today. A rest that brings renewal, strength and a deep sense of peace and clarity of thought for both the present and the future.
Jesus and the importance of rest, solitude and spiritual well-being
The word ‘unplug’, as we understand it today, did not exist during Jesus’ time, so there isn’t a direct quote or specific mention of unplugging in the Bible.
However, Jesus did emphasise the importance of rest, solitude, and prioritising spiritual well-being.
In Matthew 11:28-30, Jesus extends an invitation to the busy guys around him: “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”
This passage holds timeless wisdom that speaks to the human need for rest, rejuvenation, and freedom from life’s burdens. Let us explore a few benefits from these verses...
An invitation to rest
Jesus beckons those who are weary and burdened to come to him. He understands our struggles and offers rest from the weariness we experience – physically, emotionally, and spiritually. In him we can find respite from the demands that weigh us down.
Learning from Jesus
Taking Jesus’ yoke upon ourselves is an invitation to walk alongside him, to learn from his gentle and humble nature. By aligning ourselves with his teachings and example, we discover a renewed perspective on life – one rooted in grace, compassion, and humility.
An easy yoke and light burden
Unlike the burdensome expectations of the world through constant technological access, Jesus assures us that his yoke is easy and his burden is light. Walking in obedience to him may bring challenges, but within them lies an indescribable peace and assurance. His presence and guidance make the journey lighter and more manageable.
