The use of Artificial Intelligence raises important ethical questions for Christians, argues Dave Newton

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a rapidly growing field that has the potential to revolutionise many aspects of our lives. As with any new technology, it raises important ethical questions and concerns. In this article, we will explore AI from a Christian ethical perspective and consider some of the key issues that arise.

From a Christian perspective, the primary ethical concern with AI is how it impacts human dignity. Christians believe that all humans are made in the image of God and therefore possess inherent worth and value. This means that the development and use of AI must be guided by a respect for human dignity and a desire to protect and enhance it.

One of the key ethical concerns with AI is its potential to automate many jobs that are currently performed by humans. While this could lead to increased efficiency and productivity, it could also result in widespread unemployment and have a negative impact on people’s sense of purpose and worth. Christians must consider the ethical implications of this development and work to ensure that AI is used in a way that enhances human dignity and protects the rights of workers.

The robots are coming... They’re already here!

Some of the more observant readers may have realised that everything written up to this point in the article has been written by an AI machine.

This was written in less than 30 seconds following a simple request from myself to write an article on the Christian ethical implications of Artificial Intelligence.

Whether we like it or not, the world is not only becoming more automated but the machines themselves are becoming more intelligent. With this in mind there are three main responses we might choose:

Reject the technological advance – like many who have gone before us we can allow fear of the unknown or suspicion to prevent advances that could have significant benefits for humanity and society as a whole.

Fully embrace with no questions – some may be inclined to fully embrace all developments with no reservation and consideration for the implications on humanity or society.

Influence and pray for those involved – I would suggest as Christians we should be praying for leading scientists and computer programmers who are at the forefront of these developments to use their God-given wisdom and insight to influence and develop technologies in a way that dignifies humanity and honours God.

Let us seek to embrace all that the world offers to make Christ known.
