The humanitarian situation in Afghanistan is facing the triple threat of increased conflict activities, the Covid-19 pandemic, and an ongoing drought. Severe droughts, alongside fewer opportunities to plant crops and reduced access due to ongoing escalations, have left an estimated 50 per cent of the country facing a food crisis,’ says Corine Verdoold, Tearfund’s Country Director for Afghanistan.
The horrors of conflict cannot be fully illustrated with mere words’ says Abdul. ‘I have very bad memories of 1 conflict. Many times, our village was attacked but this time it is worse’
‘Many times, we have been displaced due to violence,’ she says. ‘We lived near the government check post (in Nangarhar province). The fighting was very intense and so we had to leave our village. I have five children and my husband is disabled. He is not able to work, so our young children used to help in farming.’
Elim churches throughout this nation already work with Tearfund via Elim Missions. We are partnering with them particularly at this time to give churches and individuals an opportunity to respond to the crisis in Afghanistan.
£50 could potentially provide emergency food package (including flour, cooking oil, rice and beans), non-food items (e.g. kitchen utensils), Hygiene kits (including items like soap / face masks) to a family who have fled their home leaving all their belongings behind.
Once this aim has been achieved, any surplus or unused funds will be used for our charity’s general aims, including other Elim relief projects we are involved in.
