Do you need a fresh perspective on men’s ministry?
After attending MPOWER's annual men's gathering in Malvern, Michael Williams, men's ministry leader at All Nations Christian Centre, Elim's church in Reading, took a fresh look at men's ministry.
“The MPower weekend in Malvern gave me a fresh perspective on men’s ministry. Previously, I was annoyed I only got 96, and not my personal target of 100 men in one event I arranged, but I have learned that it’s quality, not quantity, that counts.
“Men can be very target-driven and are often quite isolated, so they need an environment where they can hang out and be real with each other without the Holy veneer of church life.
“Even if you had ten thousand guardians in Christ, you do not have many fathers, for in Christ Jesus I became your father through the gospel. Therefore I urge you to imitate me.”
“One key to discipleship is for men to be in relationship with each other as grandfathers, fathers and sons (what we call “GFS”), and we should formalise this to some degree, so we can mentor the next generation.
“I organise a monthly men’s get together in my church called ‘IKEA Church’, which stands for ‘I Know Everyone At Church’, and, whilst eating, we share stories and encourage each other.
“One guy told us he was about to be made redundant, and I and another guy at the table were able to share our experiences with him. One of the guys I see regularly is my son in the faith, and he appreciates our relationship because his father is not in church.
“There are other guys I look up to and want to be like (not just when I am a grandfather but now), and everyone can both make and be disciples. It’s all about developing real relationships, encouraging men to be bold about their faith in their workplaces, bouncing off each other and living out what we believe every day.”
